Defective Automobiles

New York Auto Defect Liability Lawyer

Defectively designed automobiles place drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk for serious injury. An auto defect can turn a normal drive or a small accident into a catastrophic situation. If an auto defect has caused injury or death to a loved one, ask for a free consultation with an experienced auto defect attorney at the Bonina & Bonina law firm in Brooklyn, New York.

By holding car manufacturers responsible for the damage done by auto defects, injured victims and the families of wrongful death victims have helped make cars safer. At our law firm, we are honored to be able to help people injured because of auto defects:

  • Defective automobile design: Auto defects can result in catastrophic injuries including brain damage, paralysis, amputation, multiple fractures and other serious injuries. Auto manufacturers can also be held liable for wrongful death caused by an auto defect. When a sudden turn causes an SUV rollover, when a seat belt failure causes a catastrophic injury, or when any auto defect causes serious injury or wrongful death, talk to a lawyer.

Automobile safety is overseen by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). The federal agency has the authority to independently order a recall for safety reasons. For a complete list of cars that have been recalled because of auto defects, see the NHTSA Web site. Recent recalls for safety reasons include:

  • 2004 Dodge Durango: On certain SUVs, the throttle control cable may ingest water and freeze during extended periods of cold temperatures. This can result in the throttle sticking in the open position and causing a crash.
  • Daimler Chrysler shift defect: The following vehicles were all recalled by Daimler Chrysler Corporation because the floor shifter ignition park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed: 1991 Chrysler 300M; 1995-1999 Chrysler Cirrus/Chrysler Concorde: 1996-1999 Chrysler Sebring convertible; 1993-1999 Dodge Intrepid; 1995-1999 Dodge Stratus; 1993-1997 Eagle Vision; 1996-1999 Plymouth Breeze. Because the key can be removed when the shifter is not in the park position, the vehicle may roll away without warning.
  • Land Rover Discovery vehicles: A recall was issued for 99,000 Land Rovers because the antilock braking system modulator valve cover retaining bolts can crack, causing an unexpected increase in stopping distance with the potential for a total loss of braking function.
  • More information about recalls: You can find complete, up-to-date information about auto defect recalls on the NHTSA Web site. If a loved one was injured or killed because of a defective product, contact a lawyer.
