Construction Accident Questions

What are the most common types of construction accidents?

(ie:Welding, electrocution, scaffolding, trench accidents, slip and fall). The most common types of construction accidents involve falls, including falls from scaffolds and ladders.

Scaffold accidents often occur because of faulty scaffolds, and could be prevented by providing workers with lifelines or lanyards to prevent them from impacting with the ground in the event of a scaffold failure.

Ladder accidents occur when ladders with worn feet are used and slip out, or when the wrong type of ladder is given to a worker, causing it to fail. This can cause an unsafe condition which results in serious injury.

Falls also occur because of debris and poor housekeeping at job sites. General Contractors are required by law to keep walkways clear of debris, but all too often this rule is ignored.

What should someone do if they witness an accident or observe unsafe conditions?

If someone is hurt they should call 911. They should give their name to the police as a witness to the accident. If a worker witnesses an unsafe condition they should notify the site safety manager or the foreman on the job.
